Molded rubber parts for autoclaves

Molded rubber parts are used in many areas of industry. Often inconspicuous at first glance, molded rubber parts have become indispensable in a wide variety of applications.

In this project, we were able to support our customer with a molded vulcanized seal in the development of a new model series of autoclaves. The autoclaves are used, for example, in laboratory applications for demanding sterilization processes of liquids and solids. Highly demanding autoclaves with equally high requirements for the rubber seals we manufacture.

In addition to the strict specifications in terms of dimensional accuracy, the focus in this application was on selecting a suitable elastomer compound. Among other things, this had to have high temperature and water vapor resistance as well as FDA approval. Thanks to our large stock of raw materials, we have a large selection of sophisticated rubber compounds in the specialty sector. In close cooperation with our customer and the compound development department, a special compound based on an EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) was developed especially for this article. The synthetic rubber EPDM is particularly known for its very good ozone resistance, weather resistance and chemical resistance. It is also resistant to temperatures of up to 150 °C and resistant to polar substances and steam.

The rubber seal is manufactured using the injection molding process on one of our modern DESMA machines. In rubber injection molding, plasticized and preheated rubber is injected into a hot mold, which forms it into the desired product. We have several injection molding machines with an injection volume of between 400 and 2,500 cc and a clamping force of between 80 and 270 tons in our molded rubber parts production facility in Norderstedt. We also have additional vulcanizing presses on which we can produce articles using compression molding (CM) and transfer molding (TM). Depending on the product and batch size, we can offer the appropriate and economical manufacturing process for the production of molded rubber parts.
